Re-reading the article, there could have been a good case for a charge of making threats to kill, which carries ten years as opposed to the five of ABH.

There may have been a good case for all sorts of charges, but the prosecutor may have faced difficulties untouched by the public record. As I have mentioned, the complainant may have reasonably been unwilling to face cross examination. The prosecutor must therefore reach a deal. The defendants say they will plead to certain charges, the prosecutor puts them, and the court puts them away for as long as he can in the circumstances.

I do not know. Only those involved will.
