Applying to get evidence refused by the CPS

Little confused. I'm aware that you can make an section 8 application if you feel that the prosecution has in their possession evidence you want. What about evidence that the police might have but require the CPS to request the evidence? How can you ensure the police have been totally upfront in providing all necessary evidence ? Say for example if a police officer said you made 4 calls. The police would have a log of this. What happens if the police fail to provide this.
