. . Seems to have acted

discussing the 45th President of the USA

. . Seems to have acted

Postby dls » Fri Apr 07, 2017 6:16 am

My admiration of Obama was simple and unabashed. When Syria used chemical weapons, he prevaricated and did nothing.

My distrust of Trump was complete. Assad does what he does again. Trumps acts in what appears so far to be an appropriate manner.

What is going on?

Trump is learning very rapidly what it is to be the PoTUS.

He has just taken a necessary and very admirable decision on the Syria chemical weapons attack. And he could never be accused of "hanging around" until he order the action with the 59 Tomahawk missiles.

I suspect that military action will result in troublesome international consequences, so Obama took the unpopular but sensible option. Trump took the simple, popular option.
Sensible is not always right and popular is not always wrong.
As to whether the action is right or wrong, IMO the whole realm of international conflict is fundamentally wrong, so who am I to judge if one facet is more or less wrong than another?

It seems to be a quick military strike for image purposes. Syria moved equipment and people after being warned by his mate Putin. The only good thing was that maybe (maybe) the US military know where the equipment was moved to and therefore they have more targets if they want them.

Was it a good idea? I don't know. Assad seems like a particularly vile person as was Saddam and Gaddafi but look what happened when the west sticks their oar in.

We thought Assad Sr was bad, but as you say, Jorge, this Assad is truly vile - many stages worse than his obnoxious father.

I do not share your view, however, that Trump has engaged in this merely for image purposes.

Until Assad is eliminated, I don't believe anything will improve in Syria.

3.14 is about right. We should keep our noses out as far as possible.

Forewarning the Russins - with the obvious result that they would in turn warn Assad, leaves the situation as a clear signal and response but reduces greatly the risk of it spiralling further.

Not purely image purposes. But perhaps more in the nature of a severe warning. As I said, let's see whether it is effective.
