Indeed, reading the question, it does seem odd. The Speaker could have played a very straight bat, and just answered the question.

Assuming I am right (still an assumption) that a state visit does not imply an invitation to speak to both (or indeed now either) Houses, the SNP are still, as ever stirring the sh*t. An SNP spokesman just announced how grateful he is that Bercow decilned a state visit.

Which bit is the insult? I'm not spotting it.

As the main opposition party, is that not their job?

The Labour Party is the Opposition.

They are Her Majesties Most Loyal Opposition, but they are entirely failing to oppose, ergo they are no opposition. Amazing what difference a capital makes. ;)

The Speaker is supposed to be neutral. What he chose to engage in was a near-hysterical rant expressing his own personal views on a political matter, enthusiastically supported apparently by elements of what's left of the apology we have for an official Opposition led by a professional buffoon.

He acted disgracefully and his conduct should call for his dismissal. He's been Speaker for too long anyway - 9 years I believe - and has now brought shame to his exalted position.

Get rid of him I say.

No, I think that opposing racism and supporting the rule of law are the official positions of the House.

where is the insult?
However, as far as this place is concerned, I feel very strongly that our opposition to racism and to sexism, and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons.

Well they are an opposition.

The pretence that he had been invited to speak in order to rejoice in the rejection of it is dishonest.

David, all parties, whether in opposition or government, and whoever is in opposition or government, play these silly Westminster games, egged on by the media.
