the difference between now and times before 1973 is that Ireland is now a member of the EU, and so becomes a gateway to the single market.

and, dls, yes travel to Western Europe was not difficult 44+ years ago. Working there was harder. And you forget exchange controls.

The system of Exchange control was indeed a minor difficulty. It became a problem only when Labour (Wilson and Callaghan) drove the economy through the floor. It was part of my exams, and after qualification I had an (entirely unused) manual of Exchange Control.
