So the obvious thing to do would be for the EU to ell all its assets (many billions of pounds worth of buildings at least plus the assets in the ECB and so on), pay off the mortgage and give us a 27th.

The divorce parallel is naive. The mortgage simile is weak.

In his own special way, hairy hits the nail on the head. Except the kids are not children but other commitments and responsibilities.

The "children" are the citizens, surely not any other "stuff".

It has occurred to me that a "deep and close" partnership, might mean that many of our commitments could continue as joint projects. e.g. European Medicines Agency.

No. The citizens are not created by the EU or the member states; the commitments and responsibilities are.

Continued participation in joint projects will entail appropriate commitment, as I am sure you fully understand.
