A Spanish gunboat has been chased off by Royal Navy vessels after entering British waters off Gibraltar following days of growing tensions.

The ship, Infanta Christina, sailed past Gibraltar soon after lunch time and not long after Spanish foreign minister Alfonso Dastis had told the UK to ‘calm down’ in the rising dispute over the future of the island.

There is no known reason for the movement of the vessel into British waters but those who witnessed it described the action as a provocation.

The "Metro" somehow doesn't know the difference between Lord Howe and Lord Howard!

It says Lord Howard, which is correct.

It NOW says Lord Howard, which is correct. They have corrected it since I read it. So there.

That is true, and the disingenuousness of the Spanish position on Gibraltar, given Ceuta, Melilla and other enclaves, has long been apparent.

What that does not cover is the fact that Spain is in the EU, and has no plans to leave. Why fool ourselves into thinking the EU would not side with Spain?

Why should the EU be supporting Spain in this? It is not a matter for the EU to take sides on.

It shows, yet again, the utter contempt which the EU has for the sovereign British Overseas Territory which is Gibraltar.

If the EU was acting responsibly instead of like a bunch of spoilt-brat children, they would be seeking to achieve progress and solutions to the Brexit issues which arise regarding Gibraltar instead of being so crassly stupid, confrontational and obstructive.

Of course, any country which linked the matter of EU membership with the status of Gibraltar would be crass, stupid and irresponsible.

Unfortunately that country is us, since we threatened to veto Spain's accession to the EU unless it opened the border with Gibraltar. We can't put the genie back in the bottle.
