Figures

Postby dls » Thu Jul 17, 2014 7:53 am

The stats for the sites I run are seasonal. I get over-excited at one point of the year and unduly miserable at other times.

The last few weeks, with a mixture of good weather, end of exams, the World Cup, and Wimbledon, the figures dropped dramatically. They just fall off a cliff. Typically they begin to recover in late July, chugging along the bottom during most of August, but then picking up as September approaches, peaking in November, before finding the same bl**dy cliff as Christmas falls and the New Year keeps on digging. When everybody wakes up to January, we begin to climb again, peaking as Easter approaches and takes another thudding swipe at my happiness.

My better half says that this exlains a lot.

For what it is worth, those timings coincide with my experience of the peaks and troughs of professional practice.

My noting up timings are that for the next few weeks I am swamped as the judges clear their desks at/for the end of the term. Then, once I have cleared the backlog, I can get on with some programming. It's the bit which is long periods of mental struggle followed by occasional bits of triumph as something works.

The figures are heading back up again now.

The page views figures for the main wordpress case-blog reached 4999 yesterday, averaging now over 3,600 for September. This is generally about twice the level the equivalent periods last year.

I am a dimwit.

The swarb.co archives contain the original scu 'lisc' files. These are print outs of the database as I began lawindexpro. I update them only rarely since it takes over a day for the current system to produce them.

Checking the awstats figures against the WP page views, I was forcibly reminded that they are still popular. Those who have trodden these halls for some time, will remember when swarblaw.co.k was part of the swarb.co.uk site. The change, necessary but painful short term, has confused my figures, but I checked again, and the figures for pageviews for the WP site + archives + swarblaw last Tuesday (7 Oct '14) were 20k+. What was disconcerting was that the biggest section of pageviews came from the archives.
It really is time I started making some money from the site(s).

Now s the best time of the year for me. Views for the WP site hit 10,400 for yesterday. The rest may be disappointment.

As usual, as Christmas approaches, the figures drop off dramatically. It is a great disappointment to me that on Christmas day a mere 2,500 people are out there looking for case law and finding me.

Anyway they appear to be coming back, with figures back above 9k twice this week.

The Queen has to find something to do while the rest of us are watching her speech.

Perhaps I should have seasonal posts on the virtues and legal dangers of encompassing the death of the monarch or her noisier offspring.

Perhaps not.
