Numerous statutes, relating to tax and other matters, contain provisions compelling production of information even if it may incriminate or give grounds for a civil claim.


I was aware that in civil proceedings you could refuse to answer on the grounds that it could incriminate, but I was not aware that the incrimination would be that which could potentially give rise to a civil claim. I thought it was to avoid admission of criminality only.
