I think the slowing factors are:

Traffic flow, am I causing a traffic jam while scanning
Not being able to find the bar-code (the most significant factor)
Not having a solid platform to maneuver to get to the code
Stopping and thinking (umm did I scan that)
Looking at the scan readout (for a number of reasons)
Having to put into a bag one item at a time

I think its hands-down significantly slower.

On the other hand, the people using the normal checkouts are more likely to have a lot of shopping, items which need the tags taken off, etc. If you have a small number of items, it's quicker to go to a self checkout.

It is possible it happened in a game I played against the OH.

350 Park Lane
800 for the hotel

Total 1550

Dealt to each player, 1500, so a small fee picked up on the way around.

I agree for small items, but scan and shop is normally used for a trolley of food.

Also, its a shop lifters dream isn't it? Or even the honest forgetting to scan must be a huge loss across all stores.

Also, you have to build 8 houses before you can build a hotel, and you can't start to do that until you own both Mayfair and Park Lane.

Sorry it should be 1000 for the 4 houses and upgrade to the hotel. But that was picked up when going around the board.

On the scanning if you start to combine the points, like, lack of surface, one hand to scan, avoiding other shoppers = It can takes ages to scan under these conditions.

Its an illusion (the whole thing), it seems to be quicker but its really slow.

There are clearly occasions on which it is quicker to go to a self checkout. It depends on many variables.

It's 8 houses. You can't build a hotel until you have built 4 houses, and you have to build houses evenly across all properties of that colour. And you can't even begin building houses until you own both properties, so not until your second circuit of the board at the earliest.

However as this has already happened the probability of it happening is clearly 1. It was highly unlikely, but unusual things happen, given the millions of games of Monopoly played.

You're not allowed to build a hotel until you have built 4 houses. And you can't build 4 houses on Mayfair and none on Park Lane.

Player 2 should apply to have his bankruptcy annulled, it was clearly obtained as a direct result of Player 1's flagrant disregard for planning control.
