What is the difference? Surely the principles are the same.

The principles are the same, but the logistics are different. What can you do with goods that cannot be purposed within the cause to which they were donated?

There is perhaps also a difference between asking people for donations and providing a space to which donations can be brought.

If you ask for donations, surely you should expect to be given some, and therefore to have to store them. If the donations sought are of goods, then it may be wise to have a system for checking goods at point of collection, so that inappropriate itens are not accepted.

Is "purpose" a verb?

Donations were not asked for.
There was a crisis, many people wanted to help those affected, some by way of donating things they thought would be useful: they asked where/how to donate.
Some people had put themselves in charge of the relief operation and offered a space to bring those donations to.

Depends which dictionary you use.

HL, sadly you are going round in circles.

If they did not ask for donations how can anyone say what donations were given for?

If you contact a group calling themselves "<specified disaster> relief project" to ask where you can bring donations, it seems fairly clear that you are donating to help with the specified disaster.

It may very easily be so widely phrased as to be useless.
