Charity Number?

Charity Number?

Is a charity obliged to tell you its registered charity number if asked?

I suspect the answer is in the Charities Act to which I gave you a link last week.

It's not hard to find the number. http://apps.charitycommission.gov.uk/Sh ... earch.aspx

Do you suspect that one over any of the others?

I had looked there. I did not know exactly how they had spelled their name and my various guesses came up dry. A wider search came up with thousands.
Found it now. Apparently they no longer exist and have been removed from the register...
I assume that they have been absorbed into a larger charity or some such because they are clearly still active and masquerading as a charity. How can I find out about that?

I do. As the preamble states, it is
An Act to consolidate the Charities Act 1993 and other enactments which relate to charities.

Thank you kindly. Although that section doesn't actually answer the question.
However, now that I have found the listing, it seems that it is no longer a registered charity, so that regulation presumably does not apply to it.

If the specific information you seek is not amongst that which a charity must provide, then it is not information that the charity must provide.

That applies even more if the organisation in question is not a charity, which may explain why it has not given you its registered charity number.

If the charity had been providing the kind of documents covered by that section, then it would have had to provide the information. It was not, so it did not.

Whether the organisation is a charity is precisely the information I was trying to determine. It has been a charity, and may still be, but is now listed in some other way as part of the Charity commission's recent consolidation efforts.

If it is not a charity, then there has been something exceedingly dodgy going on...

Another answer might be that they obliged by good manners, and indeed they have done. The listing I was looking at was of a charity with a very similar name.

A trust which happens to have objects which are charitable can choose not to register.
