While I don't suppose that the Professor has been anything but polite, I can imagine that his conduct might well be harassment as defined under the law, but I think that in the particular circumstances the pursuit of the course of conduct was reasonable.

However, does it continue to be reasonable if the course of conduct continues after a clear request not to? In the general sense I would say not, but not, as here, this kind of thing is all part of the job...

What are the other elements of this offence? They have been often enough discussed here.

Other elements? I'm not sure what you mean. :?

1 Prohibition of harassment.
(1)A person must not pursue a course of conduct—
(a)which amounts to harassment of another, and
(b)which he knows or ought to know amounts to harassment of the other.

(2)For the purposes of this section, the person whose course of conduct is in question ought to know that it amounts to harassment of another if a reasonable person in possession of the same information would think the course of conduct amounted to harassment of the other.

Are you suggesting that it has been met or that it hasn't?

If you want to make the charge stick, you have to prove that element.

Would a letter saying "If you keep doing that I'll charge you with harassment" not cover that? Perhaps if it was more carefully worded.

Or do you mean to suggest that no reasonable person would see it as harassment? I may not speak for the reasonable man, but I can see easily that it might easily be. The complainant is an intellectual heavyweight and he is persistently and viscously battling wits with a man who is essentially unarmed.
