Parties donating to other parties.

Parties donating to other parties.

Postby Hairyloon » Fri Jan 27, 2017 12:26 pm

This record from the Electoral Commission has just been brought to my attention. It shows a donation to UKIP by "Labour Leave Ltd".
My guess is that it is perfectly above board legally, but highly questionable in terms of the party's rules.
I am led to understand that the NEC are aware of it, but appear to not be acting.

Why do people bring these things to your attention?

Why do you say a company called Labour Leave ltd should not make this donation?

Putting 2 and 2 together, your other post suggests that you know that Labour Leave ltd is not connected to the Labour Party (although I see its website uses the Labour red rose logo).

Who knows? Perhaps you could ask them not to?

Why do you say a company called Labour Leave ltd should not make this donation?

Because it appears to be a breach of the Labour Party membership rules.

No, I was merely moved to wonder if it might be so and it seemed an interesting question in any case.

What moves you to consider that the rules of the Labour Party apply to this company?

I think they apply to the members of the party who are involved in the decisions of the company. I am interested in where the relevant lines are drawn... though I am led to believe that in the case of the Labour party, it is wherever the man with the pen feels like drawing at the time.

Is the company a member of the Party?

Precisely which rule does this donation breach?

The one prohibiting support for other parties and political organisations. A few months back they were alleged to be ejecting people for tweeting something supportive of the Green Party.

But no Labour Party member has done that. A Company has done so.
