Playing Chess with Pigeons

Playing Chess with Pigeons

Postby Hairyloon » Mon Nov 07, 2016 1:59 am

Possibly because of a recent incident in the news, there seems to be a resurgence of people reaching for everybody's favourite bit of 800 year old British Law.
Most likely most of the advocates are beyond help (hence the thread title), but I think it can be worthwhile arguing with them in order to reduce their recruitment rate.

But there are a number of versions and I am not clear about the relevance and relationship between them all.
I would instinctively point to the 1297 version as the official one, if only because it is the only one listed on "The Official Home of UK Legislation", but that does not give me any explanation as to what has happened to the earlier versions and of course those are the ones that the advocates hold as sacred...

So what happened to the original agreement? Did it not contain something about being immutable? Likewise the next one, and any others in between...

King John revoked the 1215 version shortly after it had been made: he'd not got Papal authority to make it in the first place. The 1297 version, or what remains of it, is the one currently in force.

Is he not at least as unelected as the EU president is?

Who was EU president in 1297?

How are Popes appointed?

Who elected Edward I King?

I feel a Monty Python sketch coming on.

Ah, but they are elected by dint of divine providence causing the archbishops(?) to vote to god's will...

It is not really the issue under the tin foil hat though. Why was our king subject to papal authority and how was he able to unilaterally revoke the agreement?
