While the mention of Magna Carta is a good indication that one should be alert for woo, one should not dismiss anyone who does so as an adherent.

Freeman indicates (or did then) a man who was not bound to the land as a villein, but who did not hold a higher status such as a Knight or Lord - a type of peasant. Calling the King a Freeman would have been denying that he was King.
