There was the famous complaint that a court had accepted that a claimant should not be deported because of his cat. The judgment was published and it showed that this was simply untrue. It seems that someone wilfully or otherwise misinterpreted the Home Office barristers reort back..

As I recall, it was first brought up in a UKIP rabble rousing rally, and then repeated word for word by the home secretary...

. . but scrapping the Human Rights Act will not have many of the effects wanted. Human Rights law and the ECHR was effective within the UK for thirty (?) years without the Act. We signed up to the Convention. HRA embeds it within our law, but we would still be bound by it.

What effects is it that you think are wanted?
As I understand the desired effect is to scapegoat most of the problems they have had on "Labour's Human Rights Act" in much the same way as the EU has been scapegoat for all the things it has been blamed on.
What excuse they will use for still having the same problems will remain to be seen, but it will probably let them feel big and clever for a while...

But the UK is still party to international treaties including the European Convention on Human Rights. This is wharpt these anti Human Rights Act types forget. The HRA brings directly into law what being a party to the Convention did indirectly.

The fundamental aim is that we are (it is said) better deciding for ourselves what our human rights obligations are. This would express it self in making laws without contradiction from a non uk body, and not having our courts second guessed by johnny-foreigner.

In either case the simple fact is that we have signed those rights away. We did so when, having mostly drafted, the Convention, we signed up, mostly, to it.

In addition there is a real issue which is that if we do insist on making our own bill of rights what is to stop other countries doing exactly the same. If we insist on having Human Rights light after our own predelictions, what is to stop, any other country - Russia, Turkey, France doing just the same.

It is a huge error of judgment.
